What’s Your Chicken Sandwich?

Sucked into history videos on YouTube the other day I came across this one that talked about why Chick-Fil-A is brilliant with their business strategy. The YouTuber who normally reviews other history more related to famous battles, or pieces of military equipment took a detour to highlight the history of the chain and why they have crushed the competition for so long. One of the things that he highlighted was they stick to one thing that works for them: the chicken sandwich. Actually they claim to be the ones who invented the thing! Because they have focused on one thing and only have a few related items on their menu it has allowed them to do so many other things really well. Without worrying about stocking tons of products they are freed up to be able to focus among other things excellent and efficient customer service!

Since then I have been thinking "what's our chicken sandwich?" What is our one thing that we are really good at? Another version of this concept is what's your 80/20. It comes from Paratos Law that talks about 80% of the results come from 20% of the efforts. He found this to be a law that stretched across multiple fields and industries. Sometimes its even more drastic like the 95/5! The idea is that we can't be excellent at everything but the things we are great at bring us the most results.

This came up in conversation with a teammate when we were talking about focusing on a certain type of client to excel in his business. At first he felt guilty, thinking that he was unwilling to serve a certain type of client, but on second look we discussed it's better to say no to something so that you can get really good at something else, then you will be able to serve those people really well as an expert.

So if you are curious here is a link to the video. And I'm curious? Whats your chicken sandwich? What do you excel at and everyone around you knows it?
